Television presenter Lisa Aziz checked into a private hospital with depression after ITV accused her of fiddling her expenses.

ITV's The West Country Tonight co-presenter, who lives in Bath, is being investigated over several expenses claims she is alleged to have made.

Since June she has been suffering from stress, which she claims is a direct result of the accusations, and has not appeared on the programme for almost two months.

Ms Aziz, who said that she also has swine flu, has started legal proceedings against her employers in response to the allegations. She said she had also lodged complaints about four people at ITV West.

Ms Aziz, 47, has been signed off with stress and depression for three months following what she refers to as an "ambush" when she went in to see her editor and was questioned about her expenses.

She said: "I ended up in the Priory Hospital suffering acute work stress and depression as a result of what is going on and it is all very upsetting, and the swine flu on top has not helped matters.

"Never in 26 years have I suffered stress before and I have worked in some pretty tough places. I have been extremely unwell."

She added: "Never having been in this position before, my whole life has been turned upside down."

ITV West has not commented on the matter, but Ms Aziz said she had not been suspended or disciplined by the television station.

She said: "I am still the main presenter, but I am currently on sick leave."
