Team Bath Buccs first-team player Tim Davenport reflects on a decisive defeat at Birmingham University...

It was disappointing for our title charge to end with below-par performance against a hardworking student team on Sunday.

We were comfortable going into half-time, despite not really creating any gilt-edged chances and our team talk was positive.

Nobody really thought we would struggle to win the game but the second half did not quite go to our script.

Battling Birmingham put us under more pressure and created some good opportunities from penalty corners. When they equalised from the penalty spot it was clear they had their tails up and we failed to match their intensity and desire to win the game.

As a group we must now refocus our efforts. We can no longer realistically win the league but we can have a big say in who does as we travel to Guildford this weekend.

We must now begin to build a squad to compete next season – one with a more combative attitude, which has the qualities needed to dominate the West Conference and have a realistic chance of promotion.

We’ve said all year that our key objective was to build a squad to compete over the next few seasons.

We have seven or eight new young players who have settled in well and the fact that, with four games to go, we were reassessing our objectives and looking to win the division is credit to the raw talent in our squad.

We must use this season’s remaining 210 minutes of hockey to give our younger players as much experience as possible.

At the same time we want to finish as high up the table as we can, so three points at Guildford on Sunday are a must.
