Bath bowlers scooped two major honours at Somerset's Finals Day at Weston-super-Mare, when two high-flying father-and-son combinations were the centre of attention.

Craig Doughty, who skipped a Bath quartet to the county fours title, enjoyed the services of his dad Richard at second, while the Bath lead, Alan Taylor, was delighted that his son, Dale, walked off with the Somerset under-25 singles title.

Seventeen-year-old Dale, who had never previously entered the competition, is studying for his A-levels and does not have much time for bowls but he is keen to take some time out next summer to defend his title.

His success last weekend was the first time a Bath player had won the junior crown since the event was introduced in 1989.

While Dale defeated Bath Alexandra's Gary Gunstone 21-12 in the junior singles final, his dad helped Richard and Craig Doughty and Kevin Rowdon to a convincing 25-11 win over a Yeovil quartet skipped by former Somerset president Mike Martin.

Although it was Bath's fourth appearance in the fours final in five years, this was the first time a team from the club has won the title since 1996.

Bath Bowls Club's other successes this season include winning the Somerset Turnbull Cup and the Somerset County League Premier 1 championship, having lost just one match throughout the summer.

The club also finished as runners-up in the Mid Somerset League Cup.

“Obviously this is not only an old persons game, In the photo in the paper the players look quite young and as for Dale being only 17 and winning the under 25's.. He must have a great future in front of him. So I say All you young potential champions get down to the bowling club and enjoy it have a free roll up see what you think”
