England rugby star Lee Mears and his ex Bath team-mate Matt Stevens held a launch party for their new coffee house on Saturday - and had a little help from some friends.

Mears and Stevens were joined by many other stars from Bath Rugby, as well as England flanker Joe Worsley, for the grand opening of Jika Jika.

Olympic gold medallist Jason Gardener also attended the brunch party at the swankily refurbished venue in George Street.

Although Jika Jika only opened last month, Mears and Stevens are delighted at how the business has been received in the city.

"We've had lots of support from the community and the players have been really good," said Mears. "Bath's a roaring place and hopefully we can get people coming in for coffee."

The hooker said he wasn't finding it too difficult to juggle rugby and business.

"I'm sure Matt would say I'm more involved in the rugby side than the business side," he joked. "I try and help him out - my helping at the moment consists of coming for lunch every day and doing a bit of facts and figures.

"I like to keep an eye on that sort of thing and Matt loves the front of house. He's doing a great job."

As well as offering a wide-ranging coffee menu, Jika Jika also sells food throughout the day and has teamed up with award-winning John Street bookseller Mr B's Emporium of Reading Delights to run a book club.

    “He has been caught
    He has been punished

Leave him alone. He is not solely responsible for the cocaine trade in Bath. He did not fund his new business from ill gotten gains. He is not and never has been dealing drugs from his coffee shop.

The reality is that all you holier than though wingers cannot stand to see somebody, after getting knocked down, get up brush themselves off and get on with their lives.”

“Shaun, The illegal use of class A drugs and cocaine in particular, is not a matter solely between employer and employee. It involves links to some of the nastiest criminals in the world and grug users are supporting orgainised crime. The fact that the divisional commander of the Bath police decided not to investigate merely shows the police prefer to stop mostly innocent motorists (1283 in Bath in June of whom 6 were arrested) than to tackle grug related crime. .”

“We have to remember that most Bath residents have NO christian values and cannot bring themselves to show any tolerance or forgiveness.

This person was known to the public therefore it seems that an internal matter between him and his employers should lead to him being locked up for life and all his assets stripped from him, despite him not actually in the eyes of the law committing any offence worth investigation.”

“Robert - I fail to see how this drug taker 'got knocked down'. He broke the law, escaped a custodial sentence and is now being given free advertising by the Bath Chron for his latest business venture. Just cos he's good at running around with odd shaped balls means people like you forgive him anything. Let's hope his suppliers don't push drugs on anyone in your family or friends.”

“Funny how people who get caught out are suddenly very sorry and apologetic. Bearing in mind cocaine is imported into this country by organised crime, I would be more convinced Mr Stevens contrition was genuine if he told the police who his suppliers were and gave evidence against them in court. As it is this article is just free advertising and follows the Chronicle's usual line of cravenly highlighting anything to do with Bath Rugby no matter how banal.”

“It's so easy ,isn't it, to be snide and to knock. If you actually go in there, try some of the great coffee and enjoy the lovely ambience you will see how good it is. Here is a bloke who, through his own admission, has let everyone down, including himself, and is now working to re-establish himself and working hard to do so. Good on him and I hope it's a great success. It is a shame that more people don't show the same drive and determination. If you get knocked down, get up and go again. Well done Matt.”

“We shouldn't be cynical, we should also ignore all those people who say the reason the place looks so much like a bar (with bottle-coolers in place) is that the place has always been planned as a bar but its easier to get a new premises licence on a daytime cafe business and vary the licence at a later date, than try to get a new premises licence for another bar in George Street. But I'm sure the councillors saw through this?”

“Looks like a free advert to me.
Does this mean BEC gets a few coffees.!!”
