A new bicycle-based postal delivery service is proving popular in Bath.

Docmail Local Post said it has now collected, sorted and delivered 100,000 letters across Bath and Bristol since last October.

The firm uses electric bikes to deliver mail around both cities.

A total of 12 postcode zones in Bath are covered by the new Docmail Local Post services including BA1 and BA2, and a further 14 postcodes in Bristol.

Spokesman Joe Broadway said: "This is a postal service for companies who operate locally, and recognise the benefits of physical mail. By making best use of the local knowledge of our dedicated teams of delivery personnel, we are able to offer our customers the service that suits them best. The mail is collected, sorted then delivered all within the local area."

Prices for delivery are 36p for each standard letter, 2p per item for unaddressed mail such as leaflet drops and delivery is guaranteed within two working days.

Mr Broadway said the scheme was becoming more popular among the city's business community.

He said: "We've had superb response from companies such as retailers, opticians, clubs and estate agents who all rely on communicating with their local customers.

"As businesses are affected by the recent increase in national postal charges, so this local service meets the needs of companies who are looking for a postal collection that truly understands their requirements.

"We were receiving feedback from existing customers that there was a gap in the market for a local service that took green issues seriously, and understood the need for more cost-effective mail delivery. With the established structure of Radstock-based CFH, which is a regulated postal operator, behind us, we knew this was a service we could provide."

The service is due to be extended to other towns and cities in the South West in the coming months.

."Some small packets dispatched on 3rd still haven't arrived, so what is going on ?"

The four packets didn't arrive and the delivery time span has ended, the next stage is the complaint forms, oh great I can't wait !!”

    “Mrs Rob again,
    tomsjan

In that case I would call the customer service, once you call them they give you a "case number" so if it keeps happening they qill escalate the complaint.”

“clarys dear Do read the posts properly before letting rip...... my post said ""But that only stops junk mail that is actually addressed to you, not the Domino Pizza leaflets and all the other shredder fodder the poor posties have to lug from door to door.""

So I KNOW the junk is delivered by the postie (including pizza leaflets) - they have to put it through every door, not just the ones that have post, so that is probably why the post is getting so late. Mine arrived at 4.15 today. But the Royal Mail gets paid by the various agencies to deliver it and you cannot stop that coming through your door no matter how many forms you fill in - only the stuff addressed to you via the MPS. If you really don't want it you could always seal up the letterbox and have a PO box somewhere or collect it yourself from the sorting office? :)”

“The junk mail is delivered BY the postie!! This is despite having filled in forms in triplicate for Royal Mail!!! Of course we cannot stop rubbish from pizza firms etc etc being stuffed through the letterbox although, sometimes, a notice on the front door might help....providing that the deliverer can read of course...”

    “Mrs Rob here
The opt out thing only last for so long then you have to renew it same goes for MP, however if you are sure your opt out is still active then I would be inclined to call in the customer services and have a word, they are rather good, once you get past the hundred or so options, and they do sort things.”

“Missed the point there Clarys --- It travelled across the sea to Ireland and was delivered the next day - not an easy task by bike and something the Royal Mail can still do cheaper than a courier. it would not be easy for a small company to take on the long-distance mail and I was making the same point as rogerh that if others cream off the local stuff there will not be enough left for them, so everyone will lose out. I too have to wait until late afternoon sometimes for my post and I too have "opted out" of junk mail with the MPS. But that only stops junk mail that is actually addressed to you, not the Domino Pizza leaflets and all the other shredder fodder the poor posties have to lug from door to door. And again, the revenue from that helps them to keep going at a time when we are all sending less postcards and letters so I suppose we are partly to blame.
Anything important like forms for signature really should be sent signed for to ensure delivery and is worth the extra 95p if it is that important.”

“Some forms for signature were sent to us recently but we didn't realise this until three weeks later when we were phoned about it. We hadn't received them at all. Some small packets dispatched on 3rd still haven't arrived, so what is going on ?”

“tomsjan, I would be happy to have my post delivered at 10.30 am ....... we don't see mail until 4 pm and some of this is posted within Bath!!!! This will invariably accompany items of junk mail pushed through the letterbox as well despite the fact that we have requested the 'opt out' facility twice!!!! Sorry, but the sooner the postal system is sorted out, one way or another, the better it will be. I am more than happy to pay for a good service - at the moment, we do not see one.”
