A cordon has been put up in part of the SouthGate shopping area after concerns that ice was falling from the buildings.

The affected area is around the Debenhams store, with people being diverted away from the two streets either side of the shop.

Cones and tape, as well as signs explaining the situation, have been put up around the scene.

A spokeswoman for SouthGate said it was simply a precautionary measure and that nobody had been injured.

“You are correct. I visited it once when it was newly opened, what a travesty of design. A total disgrace.”

“When SouthGate was designed, did the planners think that ice might occur during the winter months and then what would happen to that ice when it began to melt?”

“Presumably having residential accomodation on top puts a spanner in the works wrt 'development'.”

“You are right, I remember the original Southgate Street, with the Odeon half way down on the left, and the Forum on the right at the bottom. How long before before commercial interests determine a rebuild yet again?”

“...in tears jezer, in tears. 'New' Southgate will be flattened and 'Even Newer' Southgate will be build, only to be erazed to make way for the new rugby ground which has to relocate due to the Rec now being underwater.”

“Oh my gosh! Ice falling from buildings in winter? Where will it all end?”
