DARREN DUSTON

On Sunday, guitarist Darren Dutson Bromley will be performing at the Mission Theatre, Bath at 7.30pm.

Darren, who is one of the country's leading exponents of unaccompanied jazz guitar will be performing an entertaining mixture of improvisations and arrangements of classic jazz, blues and swing tunes and will be including pieces from his album My Romance, a recent BBC album of the week.

Darren, who has performed with musicians as diverse as Jools Holland to members of Girls Aloud has been performing throughout the country doing a series of solo guitar concerts.

Admission costs £5 on the door.

BABEL, THE MANDIBLES & INU

Some of the best of Bath/Bristol based bands join forces for a special concert tonight at Widcombe Social Club mixing with an innovative range of acoustic music from folk and roots to world music and jazz.

Each of these bands plays roots based music but with an individual twist.

There will be a wonderful fusion of different sounds.

The Mandibles combine gypsy swing and jazz with homegrown roots. Babel's take on folk and roots is equally loud, lively and inventive. Inu's fusion of Irish traditional music with Eastern European roots is just as memorable.

FIGHTING FICTION

Bristol-based four-piece Fighting Fiction celebrate the launch of their new EP, entitled The Lesser Of Two Evils, by playing a free launch party show on Monday at the Weir Lounge in Bath, from 8pm.

The EP is a powerful collision of indie rock guitar riffs, reggae tinged punk and socially aware lyrics.

The music is fundamentally an English sound that is reminiscent of the brooding reggae guitar hooks of London Calling-era Clash, the lyrical wordplay and vocal delivery of Billy Bragg, and more recently, the acoustic guitar based sing-along sensibilities of Frank Turner and the King Blues.

KADIALY KOUYATE

Kadialy Kouyate is a virtuoso of the traditional 21 stringed African harp – the Kora.

He comes from a long line of 'griots' the revered storyteller and musicians of his native Senegal.

He draws on this heritage to create his own mesmerising compositions and brings a new approach to the Kora which has seen him collaborating with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and New York based jazz ensemble MALIcool as well as making numerous stage appearances around the world.

This concert takes place tonight in the intimate surroundings of the University Hall Music Room. For ticket availability call 01225 386777.

FABULA RASA

Formed in 2006 this fabulous six-piece Hungarian band plays extraordinarily complex music which is inspired by the lively rhythms, colourful places and explosive emotional character of the people of Hungary and neighbouring countries.

This is explorative music at its best resulting in a lively fusion of Balkan and gypsy folk music with jazz crossover music.

Expect an explosion of sound when they appear at Bath Folk Club this Friday evening.

The concert on Friday evening will be followed by a Hungarian music workshop on Saturday afternoon.

GRETCHEN PETERS

This respected Nashville singer, songwriter and guitarist's beautifully crafted material is impossible to categorise but falls somewhere between folk and country.

Her songs are often sparse rather than emotional and all the better for that and some of her best work to my mind has been in collaboration with American folk singer Tom Russell.

The tour, which includes a visit to Chapel Arts Centre tomorrow, celebrates the release of Circus Girl a retrospective collection of many of her best-loved songs.

A must for those who enjoy listening to good songs well sung.

GUITARS IN THEIR EYES

On Saturday, five Bath-based bands will be joining forces to raise money for the NSPCC at St James' Wine Vaults in Bath, from 8pm.

Taking inspiration the much-loved TV show Stars In Their Eyes, the bands will each be assuming the identity of a well known act.

Organisers Red Mosquito said: "The idea behind Guitars In Their Eyes was to do something a little different on the local music scene and to bring local bands together in aid of a good cause. We've got an eclectic mix of artists being covered by some of Bath's best bands."

The bands taking part, and their chosen artists, are as follows: The Hysterical Injury (as Dizzee Rascal), El Wristo (Manic Street Preachers), The Green Guns (Bruce Springsteen) and Dig For Fire (The Eels).

Admission costs £3 and all profits will go to the NSPCC.
