Sorry but there's precious little grit here

In response to Eleanor Swift, with regard to clearing the snow, I can't speak for Southdown but I can say that over here in East Twerton the council had zippety doo-dah with clearing the pavements along Lower Bristol Road. That was entirely down to five of us chaps who live here doing it off our own backs.

The council says it has 4,000 grit bins across the city. East Twerton as far as I can tell only has two. Both of these are at Oldfield Park station and are full up with virtually anything other than grit. If there are grit bins in East Twerton with any grit in them, I wish someone would tell me where they are, because I'm blowed if I can see them.

But then our street problems are notorious, hardly any rubbish bins, benches that are rapidly falling to bits, redundant signposts clogging up the pavements, pavements like patchwork quilts and full of holes, drain covers missing on drains that are perennially blocked, the usual rubbish stuffed into the hedges, derelict buildings galore, et cetera, et cetera.

And yet when a handful of volunteers try to do something practical about it, the council either ignores us or actively obstructs us. The council must be seen to lead, apparently, but how often is the council ever seen at all in East Twerton? Not a lot and we're a mere 15 minute walk from the city centre, straddling one of the busiest roads in the city, but as Councillor Chalker says we're not officially part of the tourist zone, so virtually no money gets allocated to us, while the city centre eats up millions of pounds of the B&NES budget on things that I personally consider pretty pointless and cosmetic.

“Quote from MoeXXX "why can't we have a little grit bin at the end of each residential road? It's a classic example of where a little bit public spending can make a huge difference to private business."

If BANES did have a grit bin at the end of every residential road we *would* end up with 4000 grit bins. Can you imagine the council refilling 4000 grit bins a handfull of times a year?

It a classic example of where a HUGE amount of public spending can make a reasonable difference and yet some people consider this an acceptable cost without understanding the logistics of the matter.

I think Mr Friend's letter emphasises the need to fact check BEFORE YOU TO GO THE PRESS.

“Is there a map of all 420 grit bins in Bath?”

“When I returned to work following snow Friday, pretty much everyone who failed to make it in said the main roads were fine but they just couldn't reach them.

I was stymied by a stretch of just 50 feet between my house and the main road. I can fully understand why the grit lorries don't grit everywhere, but why can't we have a little grit bin at the end of each residential road? It's a classic example of where a little bit public spending can make a huge difference to private business.

I was quite prepared to go out an buy some grit myself, but of course I couldn't get the car out....”

“I think you will find that there are 420 grit bins in banes not 4000
The 2 bins at oldfield park station are not on the list I have and are therefore more likely to be the responsibility of the railway not banes, in the westmoreland ward, which covers the majority of East Twerton, there is only 1 bin at ivy grove. I have been advised by BANES that they will not put a grit bin on a gritter route (which Lower Bristol Road is) nor on any other road that has a gradient of less than 15%.”
