A four-man band is leading the way in new streamline legal advice for the city.

Bath-based Rubric is revolutionising the traditional way of doing things in the legal sector by relying more heavily on digital support rather than people to run its Queen Square operation.

The firm has outsourced its IT to another Bath-based company, Solicitors Own Software, so it can manage its cases online, and its lawyers complete all of their money laundering checks online reducing paperwork.

Founded earlier this year, Rubric has also shunned the usual hierarchical law firm structure and has only employed senior lawyers with top-level experience.

The company has got rid of what it sees as unnecessary overheads associated with traditional law firms doing away with receptionists, secretaries, administrative staff, office juniors, trainee solicitors, HR and IT teams.

Instead Rubric relies on IT and outsourcing to provide back-room support. They say this in turn reduces overheads and makes them a cheaper option for SMEs and growing businesses.

The Rubric team comprises James Howell, whose specialism is employment law, Dr Philip Griffiths, who practises corporate and commercial law, Neil Mason, a commercial litigation specialist, and Martin Gregory, a property lawyer.

Mr Howell said: "Rubric has been developed in response to a changing world. We say the legal world must wake up and catch up. For too long, the industry has been entrenched in traditions that serve the firm and not the client.

"By removing many of the overheads which make traditional law firms expensive and using technology and outsourced functions instead, we are able to offer lower and more flexible fee structures, which is vital at a time when many businesses are looking carefully at their costs.

"The other unique aspect of Rubric is that our lawyers all have significant experience, which means that our clients always receive the best commercial advice. We do not engage junior lawyers so our clients' work is never delegated to an inexperienced lawyer. It is always carried out by the senior lawyer they know and trust."
