It's not so much the X-Factor, more the exterminate factor.

A band singing in the final of a city talent competition tomorrow will be relying on an unusual feature to entertain judges.

The lead singer of Bath-based Visor will launch into his performance from inside a Dalek in the final of the Bath's Top Talent contest at Komedia in Westgate Street.

Martin Fillery, of Marksbury, who runs an online business called Big Boys' Toys, bought the life-size model for £3,600. He has since spent a further £1,500 on the model, transforming it into a lifelike replica of Dr Who's traditional enemy, which moves and even distorts the user's voice in order to sound like a Dalek.

The 38-year-old, who has also painted it tank green to match the style of the wartime robots seen in the most recent episode of the BBC1 series, said the band wanted to use it in the final to add something different to its performance.

Mr Fillery, whose group was formed in 2000, plans to sing the first part of the Harry Nilsson/Mariah Carey hit Without You from inside the machine.

He said: "It looked good before but did not do anything. Now it does everything."

He added: "I'm not even a massive Dr Who fan but I have got lots of big boys' toys which I am obsessed with. I started collecting them as I love having stuff like that around, but when I had too many I had to sell them on and now it has turned into a business."

Mr Fillery has also put the model on eBay for £5,000 and has pledged to give 10 per cent of the money to the charity Help For Heroes.

For the past few months, Komedia Bath has been showcasing local talent. The final 12 performers have been chosen after three heats involving a total of 30 entrants.

All-girl singing group The Stocking Tops will also battle it out for the title of Bath's Most Talented 2010. Bath's Top Talent will take place at Komedia at 8pm. Tickets are priced at £8/£5 and are available online at www.komedia.co.uk/bath or by ringing 0845 293 8480.
