The rejuvenation of an historic shopping area in the centre of Bath is being held up as a model of how traders can work together.

Such has been the success of this summer's campaign at Northumberland Place that the man behind it is urging other parts of Bath to follow its example.

City centre manager Andrew Cooper has spearheaded a campaign to breathe new life into the side street, and the traders themselves are now driving forward the initiative.

New flower displays, freshly painted street furniture and bright new window displays are among the steps taken to give the area a lift.

Litter bins have been bought, shop fronts deep-cleaned and broken pavings replaced, while measures such as spikes have been put in place to prevent gulls and pigeons from landing in the area.

Traders and landlords have been holding weekly meetings throughout the summer, forging a new sense of community and partnership.

Now Mr Cooper is urging traders from other streets to get in contact with him if they too want to drive forward improvements in their area.

"The retailers in Northumberland Place met every week during June and July and going forward will continue to meet every month to sort out any issues," he said.

"The work that has been carried out in the street and the various spin-off projects have achieved a sense of pride and community in Northumberland Place. If this model can take place everywhere in the city, just imagine the transformation.

"It helps if there is an appetite from the traders. It's a model that could be rolled out."

Trader Mike Parsons, owner of Gold and Platinum Studio, urged other streets to follow Northumberland Place's example.

"The improvement in the appearance of Northumberland Place has been quite considerable since Andrew and his team at Future Bath Plus took on our cause to clean up and beautify our surroundings.

"As business owners it has helped re-establish a sense of community and pride, as well as improving business in making this a more desirable shopping destination. This is a theme which we will build upon over the following months and years in the hope that other areas in Bath will follow suit."

Rosario Roscoff, from Roscoff's Deli, is equally enthusiastic: "It's great that most traders are working together – things are better already."

John Crowther, service manager for Bath and North East Somerset Council, said simultaneous improvements had combined to make a striking impact in the area.

"Council services have proactively come together to ensure that a series of routine works happen at the same time for maximum impact," he said. "This has included paving repairs, deep cleansing, graffiti removal, flower bed improvements and a deep cleansing, all of which deliver tangible improvement in this area."
