A man armed with a hammer robbed a Bath store in broad daylight.

The raider struck at the Co-op in Combe Down on Sunday.

Police are appealing for information after the incident at the shop, in The Avenue, which happened at about 3.15pm.

The man threatened the cashier and demanded money from the till, making off with about £180 and a white carrier bag full of shopping.

The 31-year-old man working in the shop was left shocked, but otherwise unhurt.

He has described the robber as white, aged between 20 and 25, and wearing dark clothing with a dark beanie hat.

A statement from the Co-operative food chain said: "On Sunday at about 3pm a man entered our store on The Avenue, Combe Down, and threatened a member of staff before stealing a small quantity of cash and some items from the store.

"The member of staff affected was shaken but unharmed. As with any incident such as this, we would appeal for anyone with information to come forward."

DC James Moreton, from Bath CID, is investigating the incident and urged the public to remain calm, despite this being the second robbery in the city in recent weeks.

He said: "We are taking this robbery seriously, but people should remember and be reassured that incidents like this are thankfully very rare and unusual in Bath.

"We are following several lines of inquiry to catch the man responsible and will appeal for anyone who can help to contact us."

Jac Oakes, the owner of nearby Combe Down News, said they had been having lunch at the back of their house at the time and did not hear anything going on.

But she said: "It's unheard of up here, especially in broad daylight.

"It's very quiet up here on a Sunday."

Detectives are still investigating the robbery of a security van outside Lloyds TSB bank, on Moorland Road, at about 11.15am on Wednesday, January 25.

Two men made off with a box of money and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information about either crime is asked to call Bath CID on the non-emergency number 101.
