Shame on council

I live in a bungalow at Blagdon Park, I cleared my front path this morning of six inches of snow. Why did I do that do you think?

Well, B&NES Council doesn't.

They send a gritter lorry up to salt the bus routes and that's it. Footpaths aren't done and the one connecting Blagdon Park to the Hollow is like an ice rink, so locals have to walk in the road.

No salt bins remain anywhere as far as I can see, especially not where I live. We pay very high council tax as old 'uns, but get very little back for it.

Lots is done for the tourists though there are hardly any public toilets. For them paths are sorted out rapidly, even out of season. Parking is daylight robbery too.

Greedy, greedy, B&NES Council. Shame on you.

I am a Bathonian born and bred, bottom of the heap though. Lots of people, including my children have moved out to the sticks, because they can't afford to live here any more. I could go on and on but I just know I'm wasting my time.

“BV-BV: It is Dave & Bryan if you are in Lambridge Ward. I understand that the Council may be rolling this Snow Warden Scheme out across the Wards. Don't know when though. Might be worth your giving Council or D & B a call to check it out.”

“Do all wards have this facility June? I wasn't aware that salt and a salt spreading machine may be available. Is it Councillors Bryan and Dave to the rescue for this ward?”

“It may be worth contacting your Ward Councillors to see if they will get involved in the Snow Warden scheme like I did last year and have continued with this year. I set up the Westmoreland Snowpatrollers which consists of volunteers including myself to go out and salt pavements and roads with dangerous slopes and corners when needed. The Council provide the salt and a salt spreading machine. I have found people happy to 'do their bit' in different parts of the Ward and have dropped some bags of salt round to them and then when I get an ice or snow warning I contact them all and off everyone goes. Some work in pairs or in a larger group like myself and so we go further afield. We cannot cover all of Westmoreland because of the salt limitation but anyone who has contacted me specifically about their area I have usually helped in some way. Hope this is useful. June Player, Ind. Cllr.Westmoreland.”

“I think the owners of parked cars would be very upset if the found their cars covered in rock salt or grit as the lorry spreader in the road sprayed the pavements as well. The centre of Bath's paths are kept clear of snow but the rest of Bath will not have paths cleared. The resources are just not there and I don't think the council has ever cleared paths. It has been said in the main articles this week that householders should be encouraged to clear their patch, just as Peggy has done.
A campaign should be started called "Pride in our street" which may encourage people to clear bottles and cans and other rubbish from their street, as well keep their paths and roads clear during snow. A little effort by many people goes a long, long way and provide community spirit and community pride.”
