Sekani Simpson says he “completely understands” why stay-away Bath City fans have voted with their feet but hopes to attract them back to Mayday Trust Park with a strong end to the season.

A crowd of just 367 – the lowest home league attendance of 2012-13 – saw full-back Simpson score his first goal for four-and-a-half years to secure victory over table-topping Welling United on Tuesday.

It was no more than City deserved for an excellent all-round performance, in which they restricted a team which had scored 72 times this season to just one effort of note all night.

It came on the back of another good result against Chelmsford City but those performances were in complete contrast to the four which preceded them, not least the desperately-poor home draw against rock-bottom Truro City.

“I completely understand that it has been frustrating for the fans this season but it’s been frustrating for us as players too,” said Simpson, whose last league goal was against St Alban’s City in October 2008.

“We know that when we are playing at our best we can give anyone a run for their money. That’s why we get so frustrated by how we have played at times this season.

“We just need to get some consistency. We are still quite a new side, there have been a lot of changes this year, and we are still getting to know each other. There have been a lot of injuries as well, including myself, so people have been in and out of the team.

“When the fans see this kind of result it will show that we have got the players here who can win games. Hopefully we can kick on and get some results to bring the fans back.

“We want to finish the season on a good note. If we can get a good run together, it will give us confidence for next season.”

Bath City are at home to Basingstoke Town on Saturday (3pm).

“Well done Sekani. Now can you go and explain this to Adie and Amanda as it clear that they are unable to grasp the fact that supporters are frustrated.”
