​Bath winter Olympic athlete Amy Williams has been presented with a Scout badge to add to her gold medal.

The honour has come in the Scout Association’s own birthday honours list - a few months after the 27-year-old was awarded an MBE in the official Queen’s version.

The former Hayesfield and Beechen Cliff school pupil, who picked up first place in the skeleton bobsled event at this year’s Winter games, was voted for by Scouts across the country.

She was given the sports enthusiast badge in recognition of her inspirational talent which has encouraged young people to try out new activities and learn new skills.

After receiving her award from the association, Amy said she felt honoured.

She said: “I am very proud to have won the badge.

“I played lots of sport from an early age, and I passionately believe that young people should take every chance they get to play it.

“The variety of sports the Scout Association offers to its members is astounding.”

Scouts from across the UK voted online for their favourite public figures in a variety of categories as part of the organisation’s 103rd birthday celebrations.

Amy was presented with her honorary badge by 13-year-olds Josh Forster and Ethan Rose, members of the 28th Bath Scout Group.

Ethan said: “It was great meeting Amy Williams. She went to the same school that I go to, so we were able to chat about school as well as her winning an Olympic gold medal.”

Josh said: “It was really tough when I voted as there were so many excellent choices in each category.

“Amy really deserved it because of her efforts in the Winter Olympics this year.

“Amy asked if I wanted to see her gold medal, and she let me wear it.  

“I didn’t realise how big and how heavy it would be.”

Josh, who will take part in a World Scout Jamboree in Sweden next year, said: “Being a Scout has built my confidence, expanded my horizons and allowed me to try things I would never otherwise have done.”

Other winners in the birthday honours list were comedian Eddie Izzard, for best athlete, and actor James Corden, for best entertainer.

Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: “Inspiring young people is vitally important and Amy joins the thousands of ordinary adults across the UK who inspire young people week in, week out in their normal leadership roles.”
