Scollo nets national tennis coaching award

University of Bath tennis coach Barry Scollo has won the British Tennis AEGON Coach of the Year Award.

The 29-year-old director of tennis at the TeamBath Tennis Academy, received the coveted award at a ceremony at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.

University of Bath graduate Scollo was nominated for the Coach of the Year Award for his 'contagious energy' for tennis.

He received the award from Ian Murray, head of sponsorship at AEGON.

"I'm absolutely honoured to have won the award and it is fantastic recognition for the whole team and all their hard work," said Scollo.

"I am in a fortunate position to lead such a brilliant team at the University of Bath and to work closely with the LTA and the university.

"We have a very ambitious tennis programme and it's an exciting time for us."

Scollo's award was one of 10 presented at Thursday afternoon's ceremony. Other winners included Andy Murray, the player of the year, and junior player of the yearHeather Watson.

The TeamBath Tennis Academy ranges from mini through to performance tennis.

Scollo, who took up his role at TeamBath in 2007, has a degree in coach education and sports development and a Masters in coach and sport education, both from the University of Bath.

Awarded a Full Blue for his outstanding contribution to tennis during his time as a student at the university, he went on to coach part-time at the Sports Training Village, becoming full-time from 2005.

In February he was named winner of the AEGON Coach of the Month Award and in August he saw the TeamBath Tennis Academy awarded International High Performance Status by the LTA, confirming it as one of the top four tennis training centres in the country.
