School's out forever as members of staff retire
Two well-known faces from Bath schools are leaving after 46 years of dedicated service between them.
Moorlands Infant School headteacher Bridget Collett and Moorlands Junior School caretaker Terry Hobbs both retired from their jobs last week, and are looking forward to some well-deserved time off.
Mrs Collett is leaving the infant school after ten years in charge.
During her time there she says she has seen children grow in confidence, and test results improve.
Mrs Collett, 59, ended her headship on a high, with the school getting its best-ever SATs results, beating the national average.
She said: "I have really enjoyed my time at the school and will be sad to go. The staff and children are fantastic, and there is such a lovely, positive environment at the school.
"It has been an absolute privilege to be the headteacher and I shall miss everyone."
Mrs Collett said other highlights of her 10 years included children performing a dance show at the Forum.
She also took three pupils on a trip to London for an awards ceremony after the school's expertise in teaching reading was recognised by the Every Child a Chance Trust.
The school was one of only 32 in the whole country to receive such an award.
To mark her retirement and the end of term, children took part in a circus skills workshop at which they were taught how to juggle.
Mr Hobbs had been the caretaker at the junior school for 36 years.
During that time he was responsible for general security and the upkeep of the grounds and buildings.
However, the 62-year-old's duties did not end there because he was also in charge of maintaining the school's website.
The children mounted a guard of honour to mark his retirement, using broomsticks for him to walk under.
Interim headteacher Damian Knollys said: "Terry has been an integral part of the school and all the children and staff love him.
"He knows so much about the school and has seen hundreds of children pass through.
"Terry works so hard and always goes about his jobs with a smile on his face.
"He will be greatly missed by staff, children and parents.
"The school will be a very different place without him."
Meanwhile, a Bath primary school has said farewell to two members of staff with a combined service of almost 50 years.
Pupils from Southdown Infant School presented gifts to teacher Valerie Fallon and teaching assistant Sheila Hobbs.
The pair had been at the school for 23 years and 25 years respectively and have now retired.
Nursery nurse Zoe Wickham, who has been at the school since 2001, also left at the end of the term.
Head teacher Sue Adams said all three would be sadly missed, but the school had been determined to give them a happy send-off.
She said: "We have presented them with leaving gifts and had a celebration assembly to say thank you for their dedication and commitment.
"They have given a huge chunk of their lives to this school and they have stayed because they care and have been committed to the family of Southdown Infants.
"They are amazing people who have genuinely given so much to the community here.
"Of course, they are very sad to be going but we have tried to keep it upbeat and make it as enjoyable for them as possible."
