A Bath primary school has been praised by Ofsted inspectors for the way it encourages its children to lead healthy and happy lives.

Oldfield Park Infants has been assessed as good with some outstanding features during its latest inspection.

The Dorset Close school, which has 178 pupils, was described as having "delightful community spirit" and a place where children enjoy learning.

The report said: "The school has many strengths, particularly pupils' awareness of how to live healthily, which is promoted by the outstanding provision. For example, a beautifully organised vegetable garden is treasured by the pupils, who consequently understand a great deal about how to eat well.

"Pupils' contribution to the community is also outstanding, and they relish, for example, the many opportunities provided for them to support the environment. They even contribute to staff appointments by helping with lesson observations."

Headteacher Jo Claridge said everyone at the school – which has won a national food award after getting more families to sign up for school meals – was pleased with the outcome of the inspection.

She said: "We are very happy that our high standards have been maintained. In particular we are very pleased with the judgments about healthy living because it is something we have promoted in school. We have had a lot of interest in it from the community and a lot of support from parents.

"We were also pleased that our communication with parents was recognised as outstanding.

"We are really pleased that our school's strengths have been recognised in this way and it is a testament to the hard work of the staff and the support of the parents and the governing body."

In a letter to the pupils, lead inspector Patricia Pothecary told the youngsters the infant school was preparing them well for their futures.

She said: "Your school is a good school with many interesting things going on, just as you described.

"Staff work hard to keep improving the school and, for this reason, your work is getting better each year.

"You were keen to tell us that the school keeps you very safe and looks after you well. It is therefore very pleasing to see you are helping yourselves by taking plenty of exercise and eating such a healthy diet, even growing your own vegetables.

"We think that this, alongside your mature attitudes to working hard, helps you to be well prepared for your next school and future lives."

Meanwhile, Moorlands Infant School, at Moorfields Road, has been rated as satisfactory in its latest Ofsted report.

The school, which has 165 pupils, was praised for the standard of pupils' behaviour and the way staff care for the children.

But it has been told that some teaching needs to improve to make sure youngsters achieve their full potential.

Overall parents were supportive of the school, with a high proportion saying that it provided for their child's individual needs well and many reporting that the friendly, supportive and caring staff made them feel welcome.
