SPIRIT TALK MBIRA
Spirit Talk Mbira is a vibrant seven-piece band fronted by Chartwell Dutiro, a singer, saxophonist and master Mbira player originally from Zimbabwe but now based in the UK.
The Mbira or thumb piano is the national instrument of Zimbabwe and known as the 'voice of the ancestors'.
Chartwell first came to prominence as a result of his work with the great Thomas Mapfumo.
Spirit Talk Mbira combine the infectious rhythms produced by the mbira with drums, bass, guitar and voice to produce a raw elemental sound that is rooted in traditional African music but with a contemporary edge.
They are appearing at the Arts Barn Theatre at Bath University tonight.
