Influential full-back Rowan Payne enjoyed a fine game in both attack and defence as Old Sulians RFC came home from Bridgwater & Albion 2nds with a convincing 30-17 victory.

After conceding a converted touchdown inside the opening five minutes, Sulians responded with a forward surge up to the hosts’ 22 and blindside flanker Webber strolled over for a well-taken try.

Bridgwater’s restart didn’t go ten metres and, from the resulting scrum, Sulians number eight Backhouse picked up and fed scrum-half Gerome. He in turn found Payne, who raced along the touchline to the whitewash for the try of the day.

The terrier-like Gerome was marshalling his pack around the paddock and, following some quick thinking and good hands, scampered down the blind side for a well-deserved score.

Lyons added the conversion and then kicked two penalties to give the visitors a 23-7 lead, which was reduced by three just before half-time.

Bridgwater emerged revitalised for the second period and their powerful forwards starved the Sulians eight of any quality ball.

However, they had to wait until late on before their centre crashed over for a try, which threatened Sulians’ chances of a bonus point.

The visitors had the final say, though, when Payne set off on another jinking run and laid the ball off to the charging Backhouse, who then found Daw on his shoulder to run in unopposed.

Lyons’ conversion capped another good performance by the young Sulians XV, spearheaded by an impressive back row, who travel to Chard in Somerset 1 this weekend.
