Rec plans would have big impact
After reading the article published in the Chronicle's issue of January 17 entitled "Bid for town green status for the Rec", I studied its accompanying pictures, that of the rear view of the present temporary east stand.
How intrusive, inappropriate and imposing it appears now before any possible future developments may occur, with its damaged grassland nearby. One can now envisage the impact all proposed future and permanent structures might have on this lovely, forever open green space.
Perhaps the present euphoria caused today rekindles past memories of the 80s when Bath dominated rugby with mostly local lads. Are we now getting out of our depth competing with much larger cities in the premiership and our ambitions of larger attendances and a stadium?
Jack Sparrow of Bathwick not having resided in Bath as long as some of us, already foresees the intrusion the rugby world might have on our small and sedate city. Councillor David Dixon's final comment to the article were expected.

“"Are we now getting out of our depth competing with much larger cities in the premiership and our ambitions of larger attendances and a stadium?"
Yes, let us never strive to better ourselves in any field, or provide 21st century ameneties and facilties. Let us preserve bath in aspic, a living museum if you will. If we really work at it, maybe no-one will choose to live here and we can give it to the National Trust as a perfectly preserved 18th century city.”

“Presumably, Mr Drew, you don't spend much time in Bath between September and April, when the temporary East stand is, quite legally, erected on your "forever open space"?”

“Presumably, Mr Drew, you are not normally around between September and April, to have noticed that your "forever open green space" is already occupied by the temporary east stand?”
