​A city centre pub has been voted the best in Bath for the second time in four years.

The Bath and Borders branch of the Campaign for Real Ale has named the Raven as its City Pub of the Year.

The pub in Queen Street won the same title in 2006, 18 months after it was taken over by owners Tim Perry and Jill Forsey.

The building has been a pub for more than a century, but had been known as Hatchett’s when they took it over in October 2004.

The name came from that of 18th century inn which had stood nearby and the pair were keen to create a family-run free house, with the emphasis on good beer and locally-sourced food - and no music, slot machines or TV.

Two beers – Raven and Raven’s Gold – are brewed exclusively for the pub by a brewery near Frome, and there is a constantly changing range of three other beers from other microbreweries.

Mr Perry is in the process of installing the pipework for a sixth real ale and stages regular beer festivals.

As well as the main bar on the ground floor, there is one which aims to be quieter on the first floor, while food is served at lunchtimes and evenings during the week and all day at weekends.

Mr Perry said they were “absolutely over the moon” to have won the accolade again.

“We’ve always tried to run the sort of pub that we would want to go to ourselves.

“We take care of our customers and we take care of our staff - we have a magnificent set of staff.”

He said the recession had affected lunchtime trade but that the pub remained popular.

“We just try to make sure that we do something different but something that people want.”
