Underneath the arches is a nicer place to be, thanks to a new project in Bath.

The appearance of the Brunel Arches at Churchill Bridge has improved after a joint project between Bath and North East Somerset Council, Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust.

The facelift, which has also involved the Bath Heritage watchdog pressure group, at Brunel's 1840 structure coincides with the 175th anniversary of the Great Western Railway.

The end walls have been removed to allow air to pass through and help dry the structure out, while new railings have been put up.

Council cabinet member Councillor Malcolm Hanney (Con, Chew Valley North), said: "The appearance of the arches is vastly better.

"Improving the public realm is one of the council's main priorities and we are pleased to have worked alongside railway organisations and Bath Heritage Watchdog to develop a scheme which does justice to this construction by the pioneer of Victorian era engineering."

Bath Heritage Watchdog chairman Patrick Hutton said, "Bath Heritage Watchdog is pleased to have worked closely with the council on this project.

"Following initial meetings, we approached both Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust to gain the required additional funds to enable the project to become viable."
