A protest against the Government’s proposed bedroom tax will take place in Bath later this month.

More than 70 people have pledged on a Facebook page to join the protest at the Guildhall on March 16, when demonstrations will take place at around 30 towns and cities.

They are being urged to bring sleeping bags and inflatables as anger grows over the move to cut housing benefit for people with at least one spare bedroom in their rented home.

Campaigners say the move will unfairly penalise hundreds of thousands of single parents and disabled people.

“No, it is not a tax, and not everyone is affected, for example all those ordinary working people, not by any means wealthy, who have always paid their rent to their social landlord, in full and on time without claiming Housing Benefit.”

    “rogerh3
You appear to have shot yourself in the foot here.
It is none of the things you have listed, it is a reduction in tax free benefits not an imposed contribution. No one will be putting their hand in the pocket and paying out, they will just get less handed to them from the state coffers. So as already stated by Malcolm (who I rarely agree with) this is not a tax.”

    “It isn't a tax."

    Oh, yes it is.

A tax "is not a voluntary payment or donation, but an enforced contribution, exacted pursuant to legislative authority" and is "any contribution imposed by government [...] whether under the name of toll, tribute, tallage, gabel, impost, duty, custom, excise, subsidy, aid, supply, or other name." (Black's Law Dictionary)

“I've just had a look at the Facebook page for this event, 109 going and 78 maybe, I bet the government are losing sleep over this. I wonder how these figures equate as a percentage of Bath residents (bearing in mind some of those attending are Bristol residents), or even a percentage of those in receipt of this benefit?”

“If all tenants on benefit were suddenly to move to the private rented sector, the government would have to spend an extra £3.6bn per year, because the average benefit payment to private landlords is £30 per week higher. The total subsidy to the private sector has now reached £8.6bn, or 40% of the benefit bill."

“Ah, I see Malcolm hasn't changed his opinion even thought the central tenet of his whole argument has been proven to be false. Stubborn belief in the face of all the evidence - a classic idealogue.

Also - The Independent - lefty???”

“Oh come on Roger. A lefty newspaper commissions a combined Yougov/Trade Union Congress poll of mostly Labour voters to ask them if they understand the coalition policy on welfare payments, and you want people to believe that the results should be treated with anything but contempt?

Despite this, it appears that 42 per cent of respondents think that benefits are set too high and 28 per cent of respondents think they are at the right level.

    Oh dear...”
