A combination of creative, composed and clinical play helped the Prior Park College under-18s side lift the trophy at the Avon County Championships.

The notoriously competitive event was staged on the newly-resurfaced pitches at Clifton College's Bristol Sports Ground and attracted a bumper entry of 11 schools.

Prior started well, beating Clifton High 3-0 and Badminton 2-0, but narrowly lost 3-2 to the hosts.

They returned to winning ways with a 3-0 success over Redmaids before facing the winners of Pool B, Kingswood.

The prize on offer for the winners of the clash was one of the two places in the next stage of the National Schools' Competition and Prior rose to the challenge. They produced one of their best 20-minute performances to finish as convincing 4-0 victors.

Prior then dug deep to defeat Bristol Grammar School 1-0 in the final.

The college's 1st team squad have had an excellent start to their season, retaining their Sherborne tournament title with wins over Kings' Taunton, Leweston, Blundells, Sherborne Girls and Bryanston before earning a 2-1 victory over Marlborough College.

Goalkeeper Nicole New has been selected for England Hockey's 2012 under-17s High Performance Assessment Camp (HiPAC) and will attend three days of training at the University of Leeds with some of the country's finest coaches.

Coach Alan Hall is pleased with the progress the Prior girls have made in their understanding of the game this term. The squad is captained by Mollie Hunt and comprises Laura Eyles (vice-captain), Olivia Matthews, Harriet Gallegos, Eleanor Gallegos, Mollie Roberts, Harriet Freeman, Jenny Dinwoodie, Esther Haskins, Anna Haskins, Lucia Heseltine, New, Connie Redman and Eliza Matthews.
