Meanwhile, a cyclist was taken to hospital after being hit by a car in Bath this morning.

Nobody else was injured and the cyclist’s injuries were not thought to be serious.

“Just to add to Jan's comments: in addition to the Edinburgh Marathon, a 24 hour 50 mile walk for charity, taking part in the London to Paris cycle ride, she also won her age group in the Bath Half Marathon last year. Miriam was a truly inspiring woman on many levels!”

“Angus Mitchell is my cousin and Miriam was his devoted wife. She was a librarian, and was a bright, funny and fiercely active woman who had run, skied, and cycled with Angus throughout their married life. Recently she had completed a marathon in Edinburgh and cycled in France. She had worked in the heritage programs in Bath and volunteered in libraries. Angus was a geologist and he and Miriam lived throughout the world during his career. She had visited the Mitchell family in California and Oregon, and we have stayed in contact. We are all shocked and saddened by the loss of this vital and delightful family member. We will miss her.”

“Anomonmous, I'm sorry you took my general observations on (some) drivers personally. I feel qualified to make them as I am a cyclist, and have experienced the way some drivers treat me as if I was invisible so that I've had to take quick action to avoid injury to myself. I never claimed to know the circumstances - however if you have information, and that is why you wish to remain anonymous, then perhaps you would be so kind to share it with us, or even better share it with the police using he phone number in the article.”

“This is a terribly sad story but what a silly comment ''nb'' above has made. I am guessing this person knows nothing about the circumstances surrounding this accident hence why presume and point the blame? My condolences to both families. RIP.”

“another sad cyclist death. You cannot blame a 64 year old woman as being irresponsible. When will drivers learn? My condolences to her family.”
