Former Podium shop closes 12 months on
A photographic shop in Bath has closed less than a year after moving premises.
After 12 years, Bath Photo Optics, in Abbey Gate Street, closed for business last Friday with the loss of three jobs – one full-time and two part-time.
The business, which sold camera equipment and specialised in photographic processing and printing, was owned and run by Peter Larkin, 49.
The shop moved to Abbey Gate Street at the beginning of the year after being evicted from the Podium Shopping Centre to make room for the Waitrose expansion.

Mr Larkin said: "We only got two months' notice from the Podium to make way for Waitrose and we lost two months' trade with trying to get into the new premises, and in this economic climate we haven't been able to make the new store work."
He added: "Thank you to all our customers for the loyalty they have shown over the years."
Mr Larkin, who had a triple heart bypass earlier this year, has spent his career working in photographic shops across Bristol and Bath but said he had not yet decided what he would do next.

“I'm sorry to hear this bit of news. It definitely shows how shabbily Waitrose treated its once neighbours. The very best of luck to Pete in whatever he does next.”

“I too am very sorry to lose this shop. I followed them to their new premises and their machine was always my first point of call if I needed some reprints.”

“Shows the attitude of Big Business and Caring landlords - being evicted from a successful site, and being faced with having to clear the stock from the Podium shop on the evening before going into hospital for a heart triple bypass. And they wonder why small, independent businesses are on the wane?”

“This is a real shame, I went looking for this shop after the Podium closed and I didn't manage to find it. I wonder how many other customers they lost in the same way? Evidence that a forced relocation can be terminal...
Good luck to you all for the future and thanks for the great service and smiles in the past.”
