The Bath People's Assembly, which grew out of the Occupy Bath initiative, is trying to get B&NES Council to switch banks. It is using a petition facility on the council's website to get the authority to move from NatWest to what it calls an ethical bank such as Co-op or Triodos. It says these firms would invest money more responsibly than NatWest, which is part of RBS.

“A quick web search reveals that West Sussex, Brighton and Hove, Tendring, Wakefield and Hastings councils use the Co-op, so it's something I'm sure they are quite well-equipped to deal with.”

    “@WillSandry
Glad you enjoyed it, I've been along to a few and really like the method of discussion. There's more discussion about the speaker's corner coming soon and I think some of the council are interested. The Move Your Money campaign isn't necessarily the views of the assembly - it's not a specific campaign group - but people who attend can organise such things through it. I support it, personally, or at the very least think the council should look into it. From what I gather, a fair few other councils use the Co-op these days.”

“Not the waste of spaces again who camped for free in a beautiful park ruining the grass how can anyone take these people seriously. Most of these people are not born or bread in bath yet they think they want to take over and control bath, i say no to changing banks as we should not let people like this think they call all the shots and can change things because they think its a good idea.”

“I joined one of the meetings and it was interesting. Some of the hand signal communication and collaborative decision making was perhaps superior to council meetings.

Any "assmembly" that brings the community together to discuss issues of mutual interest is a good thing.

No matter how thoughtful, I'm not sure about the bank swap idea. The council has to keep its money in banks with the right type of credit rating. The petition says "The co-operative also offers the same financial guarantees as the other high street banks." but I think this applies to individuals rather than corpoate organisations such as Councils.

I really do like the idea - which was floated by the group - of a speaker's corner in Bath.”

“CaptainD, I guess the Bath People's Assembly is an assembly of people from Bath. If you are a person from Bath who does not feel suitably represented by this assembly, you have the choice not to be part of the assembly. Regardless of whether you choose to be part of the assembly or not, no-one will deny you your entitlement to be a person from Bath.”

“Alan Key. You are wrong 'The' implies it is the only one and therefore representative of all of the people of Bath. 'A Bath People's Assembly' would be different as would 'An Assembly of Bath People'.

I am not going to attend myself but, if you do, would you pass on my proposal to change the name? Thank you.”

“Could be persuaded to bank with Triodos. Always been interested in the three-way approach.”

    “@CaptainD
It's a People's Assembly. Based in Bath. For the people of Bath. Everyone is welcome. The name makes sense. You can be represented if you attend. You could even put forward a proposal to change the name. If it gains popular support then it could be changed.”

“"The Bath People's Assembly is not elected - it is simply made up of the people of Bath who attend - and all are welcome...."

Thanks Alan, more than happy for them to exist and indeed to say whatever they feel like saying (whether I agree or not).

But, they need to change their name, it claims to represent the people of Bath including me, which it does not.”

RBS have loaned to Alliant Techsystems, a manufacturer of cluster bombs - http://tinyurl.com/723sxag

RBS has formerly held a stake in the Bank of China, which co-operates with the military rule of Burma - http://tinyurl.com/7rww43p

RBS have were involved in a conference on the arms trade in the middle east last year and have stated that they support the arms trade - http://tinyurl.com/42agne6

RBS have also provided financial support to tar sands extraction in Canada and Madagascar - this activity has been blamed for higher rates of cancer in local communities - http://tinyurl.com/3vzq7av

I'm not happy about indirectly supporting this bank via my council tax.”
