Box resident and former Genesis front man Peter Gabriel has got behind the Bell Inn.

Mr Gabriel, who has enjoyed a musical career that has spanned four decades, has given support to the Walcot Street pub’s community buyout scheme.

He said: "For more than 30 years Bath has evolved as a great place for music and especially for nurturing new talent in many areas.

“The Bell has always been a key part of Bath's live music scene, often giving musicians their first break and always providing music that is vibrant, diverse and free.”

The buyout, which needs to raise £925,000 by next Wednesday, March 20, has also been supported by Hertfordshire based heavy metal band Enter Shikari.

In a statement the group said: “Without venues like the Bell there would be nowhere for the successful artists of tomorrow to cut their teeth.

“As a band with strong views on the power of collective action, we think it’s great to see a community coming together to try save something important to them, so we are more than happy to add our voice to the campaign.”

The Bell Inn Community Buyout is offering shares from £500 to £20,000.

“am i the only one to ask the obvious: if less than £500,000 had been raised on Monday, how can more thn £700,000 be raised 48 hours later given that the offical top share is £20,000. Could the whole thing possibly have been a forgone conclusion all along? Incredibly fortuitous how such a large amount of money appreared so miraculously at the very last moment. I won't make any of the obvious comments or ask the obvious questions, but I cannot be the only person wondering at the synchronicity of it all. Money doesn't usually grow on trees , or at least, not that fast.
Well done to the wondrously talented Patrick Cave and all who sail in you.
Lets see how the next few years pan out shall we.”

“so is it time to eat my hat? £720,000 - not including a bank loan. that means over £200,000 raised in one day?! i'm not understanding the figures. but hey, nobody wanted a Tescos. i'm prepared to offer congratulations where congratulations are due. so if this goes through lets hope the (rather inadequate) management step up and run the place as it used to be- fewer bespoke wines, more scuzzy old hippies! the Bell is dead, long live the Bell”

Nothing murky about it really. This is the money in the bank, all the details and legal info are on the website.”

“factual question: is the 79%'raised' money which has been pledged, or actually put into a bank account? it's all very murky if you ask me . . . . .”

“The irony is, you used to have to go to the pub (somewhere near closing time) for a spectacle like this. Now it's all on t'internet!”

    “@sunny_bath
Going on the negative comments, I believe it's the naysayers who have changed over the years, rather than the Bell, realizing their best years are behind them & looking, rather desperately, for something to pin the blame on.
Having said that, I do miss Hot Dog Jackson & his Rockin' Boogie Aces back in their pomp.

I'm struggling to think of any establishment in Bath that is less of a clique than the Bell. There are a few frequenters who I wouldn't give the time of day to & that's a part of it's charm - it's full of differing individuals rather than a group of same individuals.”

“dear oh dear. the bell is SO cliquey. nobody has anything intelligent to say but you can all 'rate' my comments negatively!!and for posting some diverse comments /questions , i had a torrent of abuse hurled at me!! sums up the reasons why i hope the current campaign to 'save' it fails!! i'd love it to be run as a family pub instead of by pseudo hippies with their heads up their backsides!"”

“sunny, what would be interesting to me would be your personalising of what is not a personal issue, it's tantamount to abuse.”
