Pears shines in record-breaker
CYCLING Six Bath Cycling Club riders made the trip to South Wales Sunday morning to compete in Port Talbot Wheelers' 25-mile time trial, held on the notoriously fast Glynneath course.
The weather conditions were nigh-on perfect with a light, warm breeze gently crossing the circuit.
Bath's leading rider was Rob Pears, who rode his third-fastest time for the distance as he finished in 51mins 34secs.
Team-mate Leon Britton achieved a personal best with a commendable time of 56:41 while super veteran 67-year-old rider Tom Ryan also clocked a fast 57:01.
Pete Wilson, also completed his fastest 25-mile event for a number of years at the age of 73 with a good time of 1hr 01:51. The club's only lady rider in the event, Marilyn Jones, was hoping to slip under the magic hour mark but still managed a good time of 1:02:10. Another Bath super veteran, Chris Aitcheson, clocked 1:03:33.
This prestigious event attracted the country's top riders and spectators were not disappointed.
Despite a convincing win two weeks ago, favourite Michael Hutchinson was nudged into second place by Dave McCann, who broke Chris Boardman's record for the course by two seconds with a stunning time of 45:54. Runner-up Hutchinson finished in 46:07.

“Chris Boardmans 1993 national record was not set on the Welsh course, but instead on the A34 close to Oxford - a course that is no longer used.”
