Pears pedals to 10 prizes
CYCLING Rob Pears swept the board as Bath Cycling Club held its annual dinner and prize giving at Bath Cricket Club.
Pears scooped 10 awards, including the Traders Cup 25-mile time trial championship, the Hilly 18 and the club hill climb championship.
David Summers also collected a clutch of prizes that included 2009's best all-rounder and both the 100-mile and 12-hour time trial championships.
Ben Lang took the 50-mile award and the Carter 25-mile time trial cup, while Leon Boulton convincingly won the best six 10-mile time trials award.
The ladies BAR was won by Aileen Brown, while Marilyn Jones earned the coveted ladies 25-mile time trial award thanks to her record-breaking time of 1hr 1min 33secs.
George Rowntree was crowned the club road racing champion and Mark Keyford took the prize for the Castle Combe two-up time trial along with Pears.
The most prestigious prize of the evening, the silver Tempest Plate, went to popular 75-year-old Peter Wilson, who broke the national 12-hour time trial record with a ride of 225 miles. Wilson had to ride at an average speed of 19mph to achieve this.
He added to his tally by picking up the Mike Hurley Cup and veterans BAR prizes.
Tony Dale was a deserving recipient of the Simon Hudson Cup for contributions to club runs.
The prizes were handed out by guest of honour and former Points West weatherman Tony Targett, himself still an active club runner. He also gave a talk on the link between weather conditions and athletic performance.
