Open and shut
National supermarkets are responsible for the closure of small independent grocers throughout the UK. In Bath will the national restaurant chains opening (and with six more coming soon) be the final straw for independent restaurants in Bath?

“Supporting them is all well and good, but it is the nature of the market that all sectors will ultimately dominated by oligopolies. In the case of Bath's restaurants, I think it's already happening. The chains have an innate competitive advantage and are far more resilient to short term unprofitability - it would take an awful lot of support to skew that market in favour of independents.
On the upside, gastropubs (having the further advantage of dual-use) seems to be stepping into the gap.”

“In support of Moe's reasoned argument, the smaller independent supermarkets and restaurants would do a lot better if we all supported them. It will be interesting to see how much trade Sainsurys loses when it starts to build (yet more) homes in its car park, possibly within the next year. But I'm sure they will soon start making money again, especially when Homebase moves out of its current home.”
