President Mark Butt hailed Oldfield's off-field heroes as the club became one of the first in the city to receive the RFU's prestigious Accreditation Award on Saturday.

Club legend Butt welcomed his Somerset RFU counterpart John Hole to Shaft Road before Saturday's victory over Bridgwater and received the formal Accredited Club Certificate and wall plaque.

The RFU Accreditation scheme aims to strengthen clubs and grow the game in the communities around them. It provides a framework for clubs to show what they are doing and how they do it, as well as identification of ongoing development plans.

Butt, a former club captain who joined Oldfield in 1981, said: "This prestigious award is the result of much hard work off the pitch.

"The current committee has built upon the work and successes of those that went before and, as everyone can see, the club is in fantastic shape moving forwards. Everyone at the club owes a huge debt to each and every one of the volunteers who give up their time so selflessly."

The afternoon's entertainment was attended by a big crowd, including many of the club's 60 vice-presidents.

Oldfield chairman and treasurer Pat Bunton thanked RFU regional development officer Julie Price for her help during the Accreditation process and said: "This was a great day for the club and everyone involved with Oldfield should be very proud of what we are achieving together, both on and off the field."
