An inspired all-round second-half performance earned Old Sulians a 30-13 over stubborn hosts Wells in Somerset 1.

The opening minutes saw Sulians soak up a lot of early pressure from the bigger and more experienced Wells pack, who were rewarded with a try.

Playing up the slope, Sulians’ first attack ended up with full-back Payne coming into the line to cross under the posts, with the extras added by Lyons. He also added a penalty to give the visitors a 10-5 lead after 20 minutes.

The game then turned into an arm wrestle and the heavy conditions and wet ball made for numerous handling errors. Wells finished the half with a penalty and a try to lead 13-10 at the interval.

From the restart, Sulians made deep inroads into Wells’ half and were rewarded with a well-taken penalty by scrum-half Jolliffe.

With the slope in their favour, this seemed to breathe new vigour into Sulians’ forwards, who were by now getting the better of their hosts in most aspects.

The Sulians three-quarters also came into their own and produced several flowing moves, with Gregory, Basey and Lyons to the fore. Gregory fed Lyons after an inside break and the ball was taken by Webber, who raced in at the corner to restore Sulians’ lead.

With the Wells defence being torn apart by Sulians’ interplay, further scores followed for Lyons and Martin.

With the bonus point in the bag with ten minutes to play the game finished on a sour note for the visitors, who collected two yellow cards for persistent infringement at the breakdown.

Sulians will look to build on a great team effort when they visit Bath Saracens in the Bath Combination Plate on Saturday.
