Police officers patrolling the city centre at night have witnessed shocking incidents that have left people in vulnerable positions – all because of alcohol.

One was assaulted by a drunk young woman, who was arrested.

But when he spoke to her the next day, the officer says "she was an angel". He could not believe it was the same person, but she had become violent because of the amount she had been drinking.

Another found a teenage girl near the river in Bath, who was so drunk that she could barely stand up.

They managed to find her parents, who were having a rare night out, and told them she was their responsibility and that they needed to take her home.

The officer involved said: "They were horrified and furious; she was humiliated and she'd ruined their evening."

One officer single-handedly seized more than 20 bottles from a group acting anti-socially in Royal Victoria Park.

He said: "We deal with alcohol-related problems every day. People start off merry and happy. Then they get aggressive and believe they're invincible and start looking for trouble."

There have also been a number of recent violent incidents in the Milsom Street and George Street area of the city.

One resulted in a man ending up in hospital with a brain bleed while another man was knocked unconscious and then stamped on, suffering a broken nose.

Meanwhile, a group of girls from Peasedown St John have won a competition for a poster highlighting the dangers of binge drinking.

The youngsters, who all attend the village's youth centre, created a large wall display to try to put across the message of alcohol misuse.

The competition was organised by Bath and North East Somerset Council, NHS B&NES and local charity Project 28, which provides an alcohol and drug treatment service for under 19s.

The winning ideas will now be used in a leaflet designed to encourage young people to think about the problems associated with alcohol misuse.
