The expansion of the park and ride site at Odd Down is complete with 230 extra spaces for public transport users.

Completion of the council scheme, part of the £27 million Bath Transportation Package, will be followed by expansion at Lansdown and Newbridge park and ride sites early next year, creating a total of 870 new spaces.

The B&NES Council work will increase overall park and ride capacity by 50 per cent to 2,860 spaces.

Cabinet member for transport Councillor Roger Symonds (Lib Dem, Combe Down) said: “It is frustrating for workers and visitors who want to use the council’s park and ride service but discover the car park is full early in the day. The completion of the expansion of Odd Down is a landmark day which helps make this problem a thing of the past. Park and ride becomes a more viable option for people travelling to Bath from outside the city.”

The completion of the expansion before Christmas has been welcomed by the business community, particularly as it coincides with extended operating hours during the festive period, including the Christmas Market.

Ian Bell, executive director of Bath Chamber of Commerce, said: “It is excellent news that shoppers and workers will be able to take advantage of the extra space in time for the busy festive period. The business community believe an improved public transport network is essential if our area is to create new jobs for local people.”

“..."The business community believe an improved public transport network is essential if our area is to create new jobs for local people."

Is that the whole of the business community, or just the sections that pay so little staff are unable to be flexible (shackled) in their use of time and cannot afford other travel options which might open up substantial new career opportunities for them?

Park and rides are not a sustainable 21st Century business solution.”

“"...230 extra spaces for public transport users."

Err, no. The spaces are for people to park their cars. The "public transport" bit is only necessary because the car park is nowhere near the town centre.”
