A farming family at Winsley is looking to breathe new life into its business with a shop and cafe.

The Bowles family has run Hartley Farm for more than 100 years across five generations.

The business was launched by Able Bowles in the late 19th century and has been at its current site for more than 50 years.

Now Able's great-great-great-grandson, 23-year-old Tom Bowles, has teamed up with his father Richard to take it back to its roots with a farm shop and cafe on the 200-acre site.

The shop will supply eggs from free range chickens and lamb and beef from the farm. The business will also sell vegetables from the surrounding fields and a recently-established market garden.

Tom said: "I think it is brilliant that after my grandfather was producing for the hungry nation after the war and then my father for the national demand of the supermarkets, I am now doing what my great-great- grandfather did by producing for the local community again.

"We wanted the shop to sell the best quality, local produce. We've had a really positive response from customers so far and had some encouraging feedback and suggestions."

His uncle, Geoff Bowles, also supplies the farm shop with dairy products from his farm near Beckington.

Tom added: "We have a good working relationship with our chef where we provide him with our produce and we come up with some new ideas for what to sell in the cafe.

"The menu has a changing theme to it depending on what's in season and available at the time.

"We decided the best way to make our farm sustainable was by trying to retail our products ourselves."
