A neglected play area in Southdown has been transformed into what community leaders hope will be a much-loved green space.

The area had previously been a magnet for vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

Roundhill Park has been given the new name of Roundhill RECreated after a renovation project by social landlord Somer Housing.

The trust bid for government Play Pathfinder funding through B&NES Council and then doubled the £25,000 grant to improve the run-down park which had been in a state of disrepair after continual vandalism.

At one stage Somer staff were inspecting the site daily to remove damaged equipment, fencing, broken glass, needles and litter and councillors in the area had called for a radical improvement.

Somer consulted adults and children alike and its managing director Angela Gascoigne said: "A knee-jerk reaction would have been easy, and might have resulted in the same problems happening again.

"By taking our time to work with children, young people and residents, find out their priorities and what they wanted to see in the park, we've delivered something everyone is really proud of.

"Together with the council, we were also able to access funding which made a real difference to what we could achieve."

A key priority for adults and children was a decent and working play area, with no hidden spots which might encourage anti-social behaviour.

Parents also wanted to bridge the two zones for older and younger children, to encourage them to play together, and to see accessible equipment for people with disabilities.

The play area was officially opened by 11-year-old Adam McLoughlin who won the competition to rename the park.
