She said: "Dorothy House has a superb reputation for its amazing work in meeting such a wide range of needs and I am very excited to have the opportunity to make my contribution to the work of the team and together take forward the heritage of 35 years of wonderful innovation and care.
"It is fantastic to be joining a hospice which is so well regarded across the sector for its innovation, open thinking and quality of care and support."
Mrs Whitfield joined Dorothy House in April 1997 and has seen it grow and develop, overseeing the introduction of a children's and young people's service, specialist bereavement groups and the launch of the outreach service.
She said: "To spend the last 15 years of my career at Dorothy House has been very special.
"Caring for patients in the last phase of their lives and supporting their families and friends is a great privilege. I shall leave with many happy memories of those I have met over the years and our fantastic staff and volunteers who often go the extra mile for patients directly or indirectly in raising funds for our services."
