Bath is to get its first dedicated bus service to Bristol Airport.

The Bath Bus Company has announced this week that as of March it will be providing an hourly service between the city centre and the airport.

Manager director of the firm, Martin Curtis, said: “There will be by March a direct bus service from Bath city centre to Bristol Airport, which will also stop at Keynsham and Saltford.”

Mr Curtis said the service will have its own dedicated fleet of five refurbished double-decker busses.

The service is the first of its kind for Bath people wanting to get to the airport who until now have had to via Bristol city centre to go on holiday.

The service will pick passengers up from outside the city’s bus station in Dorchester Street and will take an hour to get to the airport.

Mr Curtis said more details would be revealed in the coming weeks, and added that the cost of the journey had yet to be agreed.

He said: “This has been in the planning for some considerable time along with help from the local authority and the airport.

“It is obvious immediately that lots of tourist organisations want to be involved. Bath Tourism Plus are very supportive and no doubt we will be working further with them.”

The airport service will start on March 24 to coincide with the start of the district’s new spring bus timetables.

“Although it ceased after a few months i recollect an identical service about 15 years ago. It failed because of lack of publicity and because, as commented, many flying from Bristol seek low cost, off-peak flights.

The best scheme i have seen is at Mexico City with mini-buses providing a door to door service collecting passengers from several addresses. Of course Mexico City has a slightly bigger population than Bath which may make it uneconomical but i suspect that many would be prepared to pay a premium provided it was less than taxi fares.

The other alternative is for taxi collectivos which as the name suggests leave from fixed points waiting max. 30 minutes for other passengers.”

“I wish them all the best. Here are some points to ponder:

Most flights I get at Bristol are at unsociable hours, will the buses run at these times?

One of the reasons that people drive to the airport is the expense of public transport; for a family of 4 to get to the airport from the suburbs of Bath (bus to town, train to Temple Meads, Flyer to the airport) you are talking £50-£100. I hope the new service will make this substantially cheaper.

The other reason that people drive is that you can leave home less than an hour before you need to check in. For the new service the amounts of time required will be much more.

I always look at flights from Heathrow as well as Bristol, as sometimes the former can be much cheaper, and to be honest by public transport isn't that hard to get to these days. It is always nice however to land at Bristol.”

“An hourly service. That's brilliant. My flight lands back at 1:30 in the morning in June. What time should I expect the bus?”

“Good news indeed! People can now stop using their cars to get there.”
