It is 'Natural' talent - and let's not forget Phil
Re: the Natural Theatre Company's 40th anniversary
It was with much pleasure that I read the article in the Chronicle of February 11 headed 'A Naturally Funny Theatre Company'.

The NTC's record in surviving 40 years is truly astonishing – and I don't mean that as a oblique criticism of their performance quality or any other aspect of their organisation or activities!
To have survived that long in a milieu where creative ventures come and go like dust in the wind is a real tribute to the skills and imagination of Ralph Oswick and all the many talented actors, musicians, writers and organisers who have been a part of the Naturals over the years. There are so many of them it would be impossible to credit them adequately but every time I read an article like this and see one particular name missing it saddens me greatly.
So can I please give Phil Shepherd the credit he is due for starting up the Bath Arts Workshop all those many years ago and encouraging the motley collection of students, artists, vagrants and alternative life-stylers who gathered around the workshop, and dreamed up what rapidly became the Natural Theatre Company?
When the Workshop eventually outlived its natural span, Phil moved on to work in other community-based projects in London and currently Bridgwater where he now runs a most successful community video/film access project at The Engine Room. He left behind him the Naturals who had tapped into a vein of challenging entertainment that has worked for them ever since and brought joy and laughter to countless people around the world. They are a lasting monument to his original vision and enthusiasm.
As a sometime inmate of Ric Knapp's red post office van I have the fondest memories of those early days and I wish the NTC the very best of luck over the next 40 years – no doubt with the inimitable Ralph Oswick still at the helm!
Congratulations to all.
