Minister dashes hope of end to Severn Bridges toll charges
There is no chance of a cut in the tolls for using the Severn Bridges in the near future, it has emerged.
The £6 toll charge for cars, the highest in the country, have long been a source of anger on both sides of the Bristol Channel.
It had been hoped by many that when the current private contract with the French owners of the bridges runs out in 2018 the toll charges would be cut.
But these hopes have been dashed by Transport Minister Stephen Hammond.

“When the first bridge opened in 1966 the toll was 2 shillings (10p) each way. It was thought this was a temporary measure until the bridge was paid for. Oh dear, they got it wrong again.”
