Bath's Milsom Street has been voted the best fashion shopping street in the country.

The wide Georgian street was given the title in an internet poll organised by Google, which rated the Royal Crescent as the second most picturesque street in the UK.

The Google Street View Awards aim to celebrate the country's best-loved streets as the firm rolls out its national filming project of Britain's towns and cities.

More than 11,000 people voted over a three-week period last month and competition was fierce with local businesses, councils, tourist boards and the media rallying behind different streets.

Milsom Street beat 20 other shopping areas - including the world-famous Kings Road in London, which came third.

The Royal Crescent was beaten by The Shambles in York to the title of Britain's most picturesque street.

Milsom Street - home to the Jollys store - was praised by the judging panel for its diverse mix of unique boutiques and high street fashion houses.

Bath was not among the first batch of towns and cities to be covered by Street View, but Google will now work with the winning streets to put together a special guide.

Other stores in Milsom Street include Cath Kidston, Austen Reed and Duo, while just off the street is the Milsom Place shopping centre.

Stylist and TV personality Hannah Standling was one of the judges in the fashion category, along with Glamour magazine editor Jo Elvin and designer Jeff Banks.

She said of Milsom Street: "It's a style-conscious treasure trove packed with amazing range of beautiful boutiques and designer clobber. I love to shop in Bath."

A spokeswoman for the Duo shoe shop said: "Bath is Duo's spiritual home and our Milsom Street store still remains our flagship store 30 years on. The mix of independent boutique labels, high street brands and lifestyle shops makes Milsom Street a vibrant, exciting shopping destination."

City centre manager Andrew Cooper said he was proud at the award.

"This is a real boost for Bath.  We have a great mix of independents and high street brands which makes Bath such a fantastic place to shop."

Among the picturesque category judges was Bath-based Frank Barrett, Travel Editor at the Mail on Sunday.

“It sure is 'Mil Some Street'! Just a crying shame about all the parked cars and traffic crawling down it's spine like a cancer!
I think it's high time to shut it off and pave it over for pedestrians only! It would really show off it's beauty AND more importantly show off it's shops!”
