The company that will build the second phase of Bath Spa University’s £70 million development project has been revealed.

Miller Construction has today signed a deal with the university to build its new student residential accommodation at its Newton Park campus.

The residential development will include nine buildings that will accommodate up to 550 students. The buildings will be separated into houses of ten students and include a kitchen and a living area, and en-suite bedrooms.

The new houses will be situated in a courtyard setting at the western end of the campus near to the Students’ Union facilities.

Chief executive of Miller Construction, Chris Webster, said: “We are delighted to have secured the contract to deliver Bath Spa University’s new student residential accommodation at their Newton Park campus.

“We have extensive experience in the successful delivery of student accommodation and are looking forward to working in partnership with the university to deliver first class student accommodation which will complement their new academic building.”

Work on the residential development will begin in June and is expected to be finished by September 2014. Prospective students will be able to view a sample bedroom and living space when visiting the university at open days this year.

This second phase of development also includes a state-of-the-art academic building, which is scheduled to be finished by spring next year.

Professor Christina Slade, Vice-Chancellor of Bath Spa University, said: “We are lucky to have an extraordinarily beautiful campus at Newton Park. Next year the student residences and the technically highly sophisticated new academic building will both be completed, enhancing even further the quality of our student experience.”

“This should help with the housing problems in Bath, and I would think, a very pleasant way to live for the students during their stay at the University.

This will also have the effect to create, and supply employment.”
