Millar and Hill impress in Avon race
Alex Hill and Ben Millar were Bath & North East Somerset's star performers at the annual Avon Schools' Cross- Country Championships, held on Kingswood School playing fields on Saturday.
The pair both won gold medals, with King Edward's School student Hill stamping his authority on the senior boys' race and Millar, of St Gregory's, racing to victory in the inter boys' event.
Victories for Hill and Millar were the highlight of a day that also saw B&NES runners win five other individual and six team medals, including three more golds.
Chasing Millar home in the inter boys' race was Lewis Nightingale of Chew Valley School, while Ralph Allen's William Peppercorn was the runner-up in the junior boys' race.
There was a familiar name to the fore in the minor boys' race as 12-year-old Themis Bower marked his debut in the championships with a well- deserved bronze medal.
The Ralph Allen Schoolboy is the younger brother of twins Ollie and Ruben and sister Marcie, all of whom have won medals in this event in previous years. Dad Nick is also a member of Team Bath AC.
There were also bronze medals for Royal High's Izzy McNab in the minor girls' race and Chew Valley's Charlie McDonald in the junior boys' event.
On the team front, B&NES runners won three out of the four golds in the boys' races.
In the senior event, champion Hill was backed up by Kieran Young, Harri Elmer, James Humphrey and the Kingswood pair of Dan Harman and Robbie Hurst.
Millar and Nightingale gave B&NES a great start in the inter boys' event but even then it was only two points that separated them from South Gloucestershire, with Charlie Johnston (Prior Park), Ollie Morgan (Chew Valley), Will Patmore (Ralph Allen) and Joe Clark (Chew Valley) completing the scoring.
The junior boys' squad were overwhelming winners, with the team of Peppercorn, McDonald, Finley Marsh, Stefan Barnet (Ralph Allen), Eddie Narbett (Kingswood) and Charlie Patterson (Kingswood) finishing 40 points clear of South Gloucestershire.
There were also silver team medals for the inter girls and minor boys and a bronze for the minor girls', who were led home by McNab.
Team Bath pole vaulter Hannah Grubb opened her indoor season with a clearance of 3.19m in the Vault Manchester competition on Saturday.
"It was Hannah's first competition, so she understandably looked a bit ring rusty," said coach Tim Snowdon.
"She needs a few more competitions to get her timing right and I'm sure she will improve again at the Welsh Indoor Championships next weekend."
Emily Hutchinson was third in the under-17 women's shot at the Midland Counties Indoor meeting staged at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.
