Making a move to keep people in Bath city centre
Visitors and residents have been enjoying a giant chess set which has been installed in Bath city centre.
The set in Kingston Parade, outside the Tourist Information Centre, has been put out so everyone from a Grand Master to a complete novice can try their hand at the game.
All the pieces are put into place each morning and the board comes in the shape of a super-sized mat.
The game has been organised by the Bath Business Improvement District (BID) and its manager Andrew Cooper

He said: "It's the summer holiday and the large chess set is something that little bit different to keep people in the city centre.
"The Bath BID is all about finding new ways to animate the city's streets and this certainly does that."
The chess set sits in an appropriate spot, because it lies in the shadow of Bath Abbey – where real life kings have sat side-by-side with bishops.
If the super-sized chess set gets the seal of approval from shoppers and tourists, then more games could be on their way to the city.

What? No mention of Knaves at the Guildhall? Rooks stealing food from tourists? Pawns being sacrificed for revenue-building extortionate parking fees...??”

“TeabagTerry, this isn't drive-in or drive-by - or drive anywhere at all, for that matter - chess. It is chess, it is not motoring.”

“it's for the coach passengers Terry now that they come along York Street! ;)
I would love to know how much has been spent on this and if you think about it, it will only keep two people at a time in the city centre - unless chess has become a team game! How about a king-size Solitaire to keep one more here?”

“Pretty hard to make use of the chess set when you can't park anywhere.”
