Bath's most valuable race of the season last Sunday proved to be one of its biggest shocks too.

Luca Cumani's filly, Annabelle's Charm, had previously run in handicaps, and several times on all-weather tracks but never in any sort of class company.

A Maiden Stakes and a modest handicap at Folkestone were her only successes.

Those efforts and her starting price of 18/1 (having opened at 14/1) suggested that even her connections had little hope of a win. But win she did, being held up by Jamie Spencer until the final furlong – a typical Spencer effort.

The fancied Please Sing and Golden Stream finished a length adrift of her, while favourite Balaagha trailed in one from last.

Triple Dream took the last race, thus continuing this season's revival for popular Chepstow trainer Milton Bradley.

Saturday sees Bath Ales Beer Festival day, the first race being at 5.15pm.

If she runs, Mick Channon's useful filly Fly Silca Fly should be thereabouts in the first race.

She has a couple of wins to her name and ran in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Ascot so the stable must think she has a touch of class.

Having won her last two races, both times at Sandown, Peter Makin's filly Golden Destiny should be quite capable of taking the Bath Ales Wellington Handicap sprint, but the last race will be a puzzle with plenty of runners.
