Local reviews
On my recent return from holiday I was surprised to be informed that the Chronicle had decided to stop providing an independent review of cultural events in Bath.
At first I thought this was a hoax. I could not believe that the local newspaper with its long and proud history, and in this city of culture, would cease providing an independent review of local cultural events.
I can only assume that this decision was some sort of oversight, a result of a fit of absent mindedness brought about by the inclement August weather.
After all, there must be some twenty to thirty thousand local people who participate in cultural events in Bath, even more than those who participate in sport which will no doubt continue to receive coverage.

Dear editor, let us agree that this was an oversight and that you will restore independent review. We will pretend not to notice your errant decision and we can all, participants and audience, continue to benefit from the wise counsel your journal has consistently provided over the last few hundred years.

“I thought Ms Fernquest made a statement on this site that it was her decision. She said reviews of an event that had happened were more suited (wrongly, IMO) to be published on-line, which is what they appear to be doing.”

“You never said a truer word, clarysage50. Local newspapers are struggling, my friends tell me. Yes, because Northcliffe Papers have bought up most of them - even though they're clueless about how to run them.”

“I would be very surprised indeed if this situation has been sanctioned by the editor, Lynn Fernquest.....it has probably come from Northcliffe who obviously have no idea how a local newspaper functions..”

“Funnily enough, I was told this yesterday - and also that amateur productions of whatever quality will not be reviewed. Isn't it time someone pointed out to the new editor that this is a city with a proud artistic tradition? Or is her job to kill the paper off so that the WDP, Bristol Post and Bath Chron can be conflated into one paper? I really am beginning to wonder.”
