Police are appealing for a female jogger who may prove to be a crucial witness to an armed robbery in Bath to come forward.

A major operation is under way to find a man who held up a Bath taxi firm with a handgun.

The robber, who was wearing a woolly hat pulled down over his face, went into the V Cars offices in Cheltenham Street at around 5.20pm on Monday evening and threatened workers with the weapon.

He made off with more than £500 from the firm and is still at large.

Police have been viewing CCTV in the area and would like to speak to a woman who was jogging along Westmoreland Station Road at around the time of the incident.

They say the culprit ran passed her as he was fleeing the scene.

V Cars managing director Dave Scaramanga, who was punched during the robbery, said: "It seems likely that the attacker had been tipped off to the possibility that large amounts of cash are held at the Cheltenham Street office.

"This is not the case and company policy has always been to minimise any amount held on site at all times.

"The attacker struck just prior to us cashing up on Monday evening and was able to make off with £545 in cash – probably far from the result he was hoping for!"

A member of staff chased the culprit out of the offices, onto Westmoreland Street and under the railway bridge before losing him.

Anyone who witnessed the chase or who saw someone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the robbery is asked to contact police.

The culprit is described as white, in his mid to late 20s, around 5ft 10ins tall and of a stocky build.

He was dressed in black with a woollen hat pulled down over his face and a fleece top zipped up to his chin.

He had gloves on and was carrying a small rucksack-type bag with a long shoulder strap.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
