The landlady of a Bath pub which has recently been granted a music licence has reassured residents she will not be using it to hold parties.

The licence, which was granted in May, allows live music to be played at the Weston in Newbridge Road between 2pm and 11pm all week and for an extra hour on Fridays and Saturdays, and on bank holiday Sundays and Mondays.

Karen Thomson, who has been running the once-troubled pub for more than a year, said residents had expressed concern about the application.

She said many feared it would begin to resemble its former character as a noisy sports bar.

She said: "We are not going to be holding big parties. This is about having something nice to eat, or just a drink and listening to some live music.

"Music gives atmosphere like nothing else does."

Ms Thomson wants to encourage more local people into the pub.

She said: "We want the pub to be the centre of the community. We don't get a lot of passing trade so it is important that people living in the area use what is available. We all need to work together."

Last year, Punch Taverns spent around £250,000 on a complete refurbishment of the pub and, as part of the refit, the function room was closed.

The room has since been converted into offices.

Ms Thomson said: "People still think this is the pub it used to be but when they actually come in they are really surprised. We want to encourage local people in here to have some food or just a drink."

The Weston is used as a venue for Neighbourhood Watch meetings and police surgeries, as well as a regular weekly quiz night.

Ms Thomson is now hoping to attract local musicians to play at the venue. She also wants to hold salsa lessons at the pub and would like to hear from any teachers who may be interested in holding these.

Anyone interested in playing at the pub should contact Ms Thomson on 01225 334884.
